Issue No. 34
Live simply.
Lately, my focus has been on simplifying various aspects of my life. I've decluttered by parting ways with unnecessary clothes, donated shoes, and removed redundant appliances. Streamlining my meal plan and committing to a high-quality workout routine have become priorities. Additionally, I've unsubscribed from various services, such as Netflix and other apps, in an effort to trim unnecessary expenses. Shifting away from buying snacks, I've opted for a healthier breakfast with apples and bread.
This endeavor has revealed a crucial lesson: the presence of excess in my life occupies both mental space and time. To illustrate, each morning before work, I grappled with the age-old question of what to wear. Many can relate to this dilemma. The issue isn't a lack of wardrobe options but rather an overwhelming abundance. Consequently, a significant portion of my mornings was spent experimenting with different clothing combinations, only to realize they didn't complement each other. This routine, if successful, left me feeling content for the rest of the day; however, if unsuccessful, it soured my mood by midday.
Reflecting on this, I pondered the simplicity in Mark Zuckerberg's wardrobe choices—primarily gray shirts, designed to eliminate the daily clothing decision-making process. While I didn't aspire to limit myself to one shirt, especially in the diverse climates of South Korea, I opted to pare down my wardrobe. I selected clothes that genuinely looked good on me, documented various combinations through photos, and organized them into an accessible album on my phone. This simple solution eradicated the need to overthink daily outfit choices.
The principles I've embraced in simplifying my wardrobe extend to other facets of life. Simplifying, to me, does not connote deprivation but rather living with minimal complications and concentrating on what genuinely matters. It stands distinct from minimalism, which has been commodified and often stifles creativity. Minimalism and its relative, frugalism, are byproducts rather than drivers of a simple life—a life characterized by minimal desires and time frugality, rooted in contentment and resource optimization.
A wealthy man isn't one who has a lot, but one who, when seduced by abundance, can say 'I have enough’.
To cultivate a simple life, I reflect on key questions:
Which possessions can I eliminate without compromising functionality?
What aspects of my life need reevaluation and reorganization?
How can I reduce friction in my daily movements, starting from the morning?
What non-essential elements can I peripheralize to focus on my main goals?
If I strip away nonessentials, would my purpose persist?
These questions guide my ongoing journey to simplify. Thus far, the experience has been enlightening, creating mental space and instilling a sense of ease. My mornings flow seamlessly, and I leave for the day with a contented smile, having invested time and thought in my attire beforehand. My meals are both healthy and aligned with my fitness goals, and at work, my focus is directed toward what truly matters.
This intentional simplification process has allowed me to declutter my life, carve space for meaningful pursuits, and intensify my efforts toward life goals. I find myself more present and appreciative, and my time has become a more intimate resource. It's a transformative journey, marking personal growth and clarity. Extravagance no longer appeals; instead, I cherish what I have, recognizing its significance in my journey.
I encourage you to embark on your own quest for simplicity. Consider what aspects of your life could benefit from decluttering and intentional focus. Embrace the notion that simplicity isn't about deprivation but about cherishing what genuinely adds value to your existence. Evaluate your possessions, relationships, and commitments, seeking to retain only what aligns with your core values. Remember, the essence of a simple life lies in the mindful curation of your surroundings and pursuits. By streamlining the unnecessary, you create space for authenticity, joy, and a deeper connection with the essence of your being. May your journey towards simplicity be as enriching and transformative as mine has been, leading you to a life that resonates with purpose and fulfillment.
